23rd Annual Women on Wheels International Ride-In BLOG

Last updated August 14, 2009.

-------------

If you’re a WOW member, this is the premiere annual ride in which WOW members from all over North America converge in one location for three days of festivities celebrating women in the sport of motorcycling. There are lots of activities, vendors, and of course, other women riders to talk bike with. It’s a fun and rewarding event that is definitely worth the journey.

This year’s WOW International Ride-In will be taking place in Kerrville, TX from July 7-9, 2009. The straight journey is a little under 1300 miles from Los Angeles (the route is, literally, the 10 freeway for the entire length). In saying that, this is the closest the annual Ride-In location has been to California since 2001 (Redding, CA).

Of course, it's not my style to take the shortest route...anywhere. My proposed trip route will be taking me across the United States to Columbus, OH and then back down into the southwest into Kerrville.

ESTIMATED COSTS

Fuel: approx. $300

  • current gas average (regular) = $1.94 as of 3/6/09
    • 5500 miles @ 40MPG = 137.5 or 138 gallons of gas
    • 138 gallons x $1.94/gal. = approx $270

Lodging (hotel w/ camping TBD): approx. $400

Emergency costs (one set of replacement tires): $300

Misc. Expenses (food, stickers, souvenirs): $30/day x 14 days = $420

Total allocated for trip: approx. $1500

In preparation for planning out this long-distance ride, I prepared some informational materials for fellow WOW members who are thinking of going on this Ride-In. These are more of FAQs and idea lists. I hope they will help others.

THE LOGISTICS:

Here is the following breakdown on supplies and estimated costs for this trip.

SUPPLIES

The following are supplies that will be packed on my motorcycle for this long distance trip. Keep in mind the following variables:

- Temperature: weather is guaranteed to hit over 100 degrees, but from previous experience, temps have been known to dip below 50 degrees. It is better to bring both types of gear (hot & cold) than to be stuck in the middle of nowhere feeling more naked than Lady Godiva.

- Comfort: It is estimated that I will be travelling close to 5500 miles by the time this journey is over. There are more things than my butt that need to be comfortable during the entire journey.

- Energy: choice of snacks and food are extremely important because I will be burning calories while fighting the elements on the motorcycle. Calories and water must be replenished at all times.

(1) 2007 FJR1300A motorcycle (duh!)

varied collections of granola bars, peanuts, and other high-protein snacks (fruit if possible)

(1) Camelbak wearable water reservoir

tailbag containing (1) waterproof saddlebag liner filled with ice and lots of water/Gatorade/etc.)

(1) Garmin Zumo 550 + XM Radio

(lots!) of MP3s

(1) RAM Self-Balancing Cup Holder

(2) helmet faceshields (clear + tinted)

(1) mesh jacket

(1) Aerostitch Roadcrafter jacket

(1) Aerostitch Darien pants

(1) waterproof jacket and pants liner

(3) various pairs of motorcycle gloves (mesh, standard, waterproof)

(1) portable motorcycle half cover (see http://www.eztouring.com/)

(1) Gold Bond medicated body powder

(2) pairs of boots (standard, waterproof)

(1) pair of flipflops

(1) laptop...how else am I going to continue to write this? LOL

As a departure from the standard blog and due to time constraints, I've summarized the trip in a series of pictures that I took with my phone on the road. For a visual tour of some of the sights of my trip, please visit:
